DVIP: Souper Bowl

DVIP is preparing for their Annual Souper Bowl Fundraiser (Thursday, February 3rd) and they need bowls. Lots, and lots of bowls. Please consider using your creative abilities to make a bowl (cost $8, to be donated) at Fired Up (112 South Linn Street) on Saturday, January 8th. Or, just gather bowls to be donated! Thank you.

The Season of Giving

There are so many ways to celebrate the Holidays. And, one of the ways the members of Iowa City Junior Service League embrace the Season is throw donations and volunteer. Happy Holidays and a blessed New Year to all.

It's a Dirty Job, but Someone has to do it...

Laundry. It's something we all have in common. Maybe some of us love it and look forward to it. More likely however, it's a necessary evil that keeps our household running smoothly. In our first edition of getting to know our fellow members with a poll question, I want to know:

When do you do laundry?

Solstice Stride: Date Set

The event is scheduled for Sunday, June 19 at 4:00 pm in the ST Morrison park area of Coralville. Mark your calendars (early)!

Fall Greeting from our President

Apples, pumpkins, changing leaves, wow, I can't believe it is October already. Our new member class is really up and running. They have so much energy, I can hardly keep track of all their ideas. I really wanted to say thank-you to all of our members for making ICJSL a priority in your busy schedule. I know, personally, how busy fall can be, so I appreciate you making time for meetings, even if it means coming a little late or leaving a little early. It does take a "village" to make this organization so successful and I appreciate everyone being a part of the ICJSL Village!

The program has grown from a small program only available to state agencies to its present function of providing all Iowa non-profit, charitable, and government organizations with an easy and effective way to honor their volunteers with a prestigious state-level recognition award.

United Action for Youth Attic

United Action for Youth's 410 Iowa Avenue office housed boxes of wonderful donated baby and child items in their attic. Over time, the accumulated clothes, toys, and gear built up to an inaccessible pile.

JSL members sorted through all the items, then categorized the clothes by size and gear by need. We built a nifty hanging system that case workers could "shop" before visiting families.

Check out the new -- and neat -- UAY attic!

Bowls Needed

The Iowa City Junior Service League has been painting and donating bowls for the upcoming DVIP event. Find out how to get involved! Who doesn't love soup!

ReNEWvenation is a unique fundraiser for the Iowa City Junior Service League coming up fast on Saturday October 24th and Sunday October 25th, 2009.

The event will feature two flood-effected condos in the Idylwild Neighborhood and showcase how the community can reuse, recycle, and restore in decorating. The condos will feature interior designers and artists decorating rooms and using items that have been restored or reused. Interior designers will be assigned a room and are expected to collaborate with either their own partners or any artists that want to participate. Artists are invited to see the space for potential mural work, faux painting, furniture painting, as well as providing art for the walls and accessories. All furnishings used should have some sort of element that pertains to the theme or are sustainable in nature.

The ICJSL would like to invite any potential participants to tour the two condos on Friday, August 14th between 9AM and 12PM to get a better sense of the space and discuss how they could take part. The addresses of the two locations are: 18 Trevose and 23 Newlyn. Those interested are encouraged to come during that time frame to tour.

The ICJSL is partnering with B&H Builders who have built both condos. Again, the fundraising event will be held Saturday October 24th and Sunday October 25th, and feature a sale of the items used at the end of the day on Sunday to the public. The fundraiser will benefit flood relief, as well as ICJSL projects.

If you are unable to attend the open house, please email
renewvenation@gmail.com or call Jan Finlayson at 319-321-7360 to arrange a time. You can learn more about the ICJSL at http://www.icjsl.org/. This is a great opportunity for the community to take part in!
